Systems for anti-armor

Anti-armor weapons exist to defeat tanks and armored vehicles. The specs that matter are warhead type and penetration (tandem-charge HEAT for reactive armor, kinetic penetrators for direct-fire guns), guidance for hit probability at range, and effective range for standoff from the target's own weapons. Warhead type matters as much as range: the best guidance is wasted against armor the warhead cannot defeat.

What matters for anti-armor

  • Warhead type: tandem-charge HEAT defeats explosive reactive armor; kinetic penetrators need high muzzle velocity instead.
  • Muzzle velocity: for kinetic (gun-fired) anti-armor rounds, higher velocity means flatter trajectory and greater penetration.
  • Effective range: standoff distance from the target's own return fire. Direct-fire anti-tank guns and top-attack missiles occupy very different range brackets.
  • Guidance: wire, laser, or fire-and-forget infrared guidance determines hit probability and crew exposure time.

Frequently asked questions

Why does warhead type matter more than range for anti-armor weapons?
Modern tanks carry explosive reactive armor and active protection systems. A warhead not designed to defeat them will fail regardless of how far or accurately it is delivered, so warhead type is the first filter; range and guidance come second.
What is a top-attack anti-armor weapon?
A missile that approaches from above and strikes the thinner top armor of a vehicle, where reactive armor and applique protection are weakest. It is a design response to modern composite and reactive armor on frontal and side arcs.
