Overview

The US16E is Martin-Baker's dedicated ejection seat for the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, a member of the company's lightweight Mk16 seat family that uses the twin catapult outer-cylinder tubes as both the ejection-propulsion system and the seat's primary structure, paired with an underseat rocket motor for sustained thrust after the initial catapult stroke (plus a lateral thrust rocket on twin-seat aircraft). It is a zero-altitude, zero-airspeed ('zero-zero') seat, capable of a safe escape from ground level in a near-level attitude up to a maximum ejection speed of 600 knots equivalent airspeed and an operating ceiling of 50,000 feet, and is designed to accommodate a wide range of aircrew, from 103 lb (46.7 kg) to 245 lb (111.1 kg) boarding weight. Following safety concerns raised around 2015 about elevated neck-injury risk for lighter pilots during high-speed ejections, Martin-Baker introduced a series of fixes at its own cost, including a head-support panel, a lighter-weight helmet requirement and a timing-delay switch that adjusts parachute deployment loads to the pilot's weight; the US16E's results were subsequently revalidated by the F-35 Joint Program Office. Over 1,500 US16E seats are in service across the global F-35 fleet, with Martin-Baker crediting the seat with multiple confirmed life-saving ejections.
