Overview

The Mack Defense M917A3 Heavy Dump Truck (HDT) adapts the commercial Mack Granite chassis to US Army logistics and engineering requirements, replacing the legacy M917-series dump truck fleet. It is built in an 8x8 configuration with all-wheel drive, reinforced axles, a central tire inflation system and Mack's PRIMAAX EX rear suspension for cross-country mobility, and is powered by a 440-horsepower Mack MP8 13-liter diesel engine (with a 520-horsepower/1,860 lb-ft option) paired to an Allison 4500 Gen5 six-speed automatic transmission and a Meritor MTC-3220FV transfer case. The standard-cab variant carries up to 27 tons of payload (94,500 lb gross vehicle weight) in a heated, 18-cubic-yard steel dump body suited to earthmoving, road-construction and general engineering-support missions. Mack Defense began serial production in 2022 and delivered its 500th production M917A3 to the US Army by 2025, alongside a follow-on order for 450 additional trucks announced in 2025.
